Eastern Approach

Restoration Sectors

For the purposes of full identification, surveying, planning, costing and incremental restoration, the entire Eastern Approach Project may be further sub-divided into sections, each having approximately uniform restoration requirements or constraints.

Sections are delimited by an existing (or necessarily reinstated) crossing feature; often a Bridge.
Each section has been allocated an identifier, e.g. LE2 (Lapal East section 2) with ordinals (and yardage) which increase from East to West, from the navigable W&B canal as the origin - LE0. Some distances quoted in this revision of the Plan are approximate. (Measured distances are highlighted in bold.)

The general line of the Eastern Approach canal is almost exactly Latitudinal, as is the Lapal Tunnel.

The entire Dudley Number Two canal, including all stretches of the Lapal Canal, runs at the Birmingham Water Level (453 ft) with NO level-changing Locks.
All Locks are for water-management or isolation purposes only (and will normally remain open).

The Boundary between any two adjacent sections is coded as the far-end (western) feature of that section (e.g. LE2B), but may also be coded as the near-end (eastern) feature of the next section, when necessary (e.g. LE3A = LE2B).
Letters (C-Z) are used to identify other crossing features or perpendicular demarcations within a section. The letters N, S, E, W are reserved for compass-identified sub-sections.

Additional numerals, with point separators, may be used to identify sub- or sub-sub sections as required (e.g. LE2.1, LE3.2.5). These designations may be applied, as required, in the light of detailed surveying or when excavation of the infill reveals special or unforeseen restoration requirements.
